Mary Jane Rathbun (1922-1999), known as Brownie Mary, was a medical cannabis rights activist often referred to as the “Florence Nightengale of the medical marijuana movement.” Her advocacy for cannabis legalization began in the 1960s but it was her care as a volunteer at San Francisco General Hospital for those who had AIDS during the 1980s that built her fame. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, Rathbun used her famous marijuana brownie recipe to help patients ease the pain of this disease, and this also encouraged them to eat as many had lost their appetites.

International Women’s Day celebrated annually on March 8th as a focal point in the women’s right movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights and violence and abuse against women. Today we highlight Tammy Pettigrew aka @thecannabiscutie A trailblazer in the industry advocating, educating and empowering women in the space. As the first black female dispensary owner in Colorado, Wanda James is an industry pioneer. It is well documented that the war on drugs disproportionately targets people of color. African Americans are nearly four times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white Americans even though people in this country use marijuana at roughly the same rates, as reported by the ACLU. This makes James’ accomplishments all the more significant and she asserts that there should be far more like her in the industry. Before owning a dispensary, James served on Barack Obama’s finance committee in 2008 and currently works as CEO of @simplypuredispo which she co-owns with her husband, Scott Durrah. Seeing the long road women (particularly those of color) have taken in the fight for cannabis legalization, James a trail blazer at the epicenter of cannabis culture.

Roland Conner’s first foray into the cannabis as a teenager in the early 1990s resulted in a string of arrests and convictions on possession and other charges. Now at 50 he is returning to the industry this time with the states full support. I missed your Connor who grew up in public housing in Far Rockaway. Queens opened a dispensary on Tuesday January 24th in Greenwich Village under state initiative to give people convicted of offenses related to cannabis a Headstart in the newly legal business. The shop smacked!, Is just a second license store to open since the state legalized recreational cannabis in March 2021. But Mr. Connor is the first entrepreneur with a marijuana conviction to open a dispensary as a result of the initiative, which is being watched across the country. Ashley Southall/Nee York Times.

Sunday’s Super Bowl will be the first with two Black starting quarterbacks — Jalen Hurts of the Eagles and Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs. “I think about all the rich history in this game, and to be part of such an historic event, historic moment, it’s special,” said Hurts. Mahomes used the word “historic.” “So many people laid the foundation before us,” he said, “and to be playing with a guy like Jalen, who I know is doing it the right way, it’s going to be a special moment that I hope lives on forever.”
